All this tells us is that your average man on the street is terrible at math. The "ideal" distribution is less than you get from simple lifecycle effects even with everyone having the exact same income and saving patterns throughout life. That is, people near retirement age, who have had 40+ years to save, will naturally have much more wealth than people in their early 20s, who have just started saving. That alone creates more wealth inequality than in the first chart he showed (i.e., respondents' estimate of the actual distribution). The "ideal" distribution is just ridiculous.
Add in even a modest degree of income inequality, differences in savings habits, and a government-run retirement system that doesn't show up in the wealth statistics, and you get a wealth distribution that would have even moderate Democrats frothing at the mouth.
To get anything closely resembling either of the first two distributions, you'd have to implement utterly ruinous rates of taxation and redistribution, far beyond anything seen in Europe.
Fun fact: The professor who did the survey mentioned in the video had to lie to the subjects. He showed them two distributions and told them that they were the American and Swedish wealth distributions. In fact, the second chart was the Swedish income distribution, not the Swedish wealth distribution. Why? Because the Swedish wealth distribution looked too much like the American wealth distribution to support the point he was trying to make.
